Why Are We So Interested in the Moon?

The shrouding mystery and wonder are some of the things that keep us interested in the moon, but why are powerful people interested in the moon really?

The moon is a natural satellite that orbits Earth for millions of years. It provides light in the darkness of the night. It also provides guiding illumination for nocturnal creatures that depend on its phases for reproduction, direction, and time awareness.

For us, we use the moon’s mystery as part of our culture. We tell stories of horror or adventures that are passed down to the next generations. Wayne Scott Harral’s Moon Luck tells a crime fiction set on the moon. It follows 30 astronauts and their experiences 384,400 km from Earth.

Moon Luck by Harral explores the lives of people on the surface of the moon as they try to survive with their colonies. However, as they try to thrive and grow plants on the surface of the moon, members of the colony die in an accident. However, it all points out a case of murder.

Speaking of the moon and all the stories we can tell surrounding it, what makes us so interested in it?

Here are some real-life reasons why the major powers of Earth are interested in the moon:

Claims for History

So, in school, we have learned that Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin were the first people to walk on the surface of the moon. Walking on the lunar surface gives us ideas about other possibilities we can still do and make it to history books or the hall of Fame.

Right now, scientists are trying to make scientific discoveries on the moon as it is still mysterious to us all. Studies about habitation and mineral mining are popular in the media nowadays. Who knows what else they’re trying to discover on the moon? Most of these studies have never been done yet, so these people are aiming for a Nobel entitlement.

Scientific Breakthrough

Making a scientific breakthrough is a difficult task, especially if the subject of the study is as mysterious and difficult to study as the moon. Astrophysicists try to find ways to discover ideas and things that are worthy of further studies and tests. Other than getting a Nobel title and a name for history, these breakthroughs will help us finally get to know more about our own planetary satellite, opening doors to knowing the other celestial bodies in the Universe.

Moon Mining

One of the reasons why the major powers of Earth are interested in the moon is its possibility of mining. Additionally, rare metals are present on the moon. It is not yet known how one can mine on the moon, but it’s a job for space explorers to pursue. Many private businesses are interested in the idea, trying to look for any minerals that are valuable for the future of mining, business, economy, and money.

Establishing Business Infrastructure

Private businesses are also aiming to build infrastructures on the moon that could help them establish a business for space travel and exploration. Right now, two space hotels are already in the works and will possibly open in five years.

Studying Water and Its Possibility to Support Life

Water is an important substance that supports life. Finding water in space opens the possibility that we can thrive in the vastness of space. Scientists study traces of water on surfaces of the moon, which means sustainability on the moon is on the list of the many possibilities a man can exploit for future business and scientific endeavors.

Helium-3

Helium-3 is another important chemical found on the surface of the moon. This Helium is rare on Earth’s surface, which means it will be valuable when collected and sold. Helium-3 is vital in providing nuclear energy. It is not dangerous nor radioactive, so collecting tons of it will not pose a danger to the major powers.

The Moon Treaty protects the moon from sectors that plan to build establishments and military bases on its surface. Military arms and other weapons are also forbidden in space, according to this treaty. In addition, the moon is not owned by any nation; thus, it cannot be owned by Earth’s major powers. However, Russia and China did not join this agreement.
