Writing is always among the activities that bring healing. There are many things that you can write about, such as your own experiences. Imagine the things that can happen after you put some parts of your life into writing. It could inspire and move others to do the same. In literature, there is a genre that houses different stories of perseverance, determination, courage, faith, and others that happened in particular stages of a person’s life, which is called memoir.
Memoir belongs to nonfiction, which means that everything in the story must be factual and isn’t fabricated. Donut Hole is author RC LeBeau’s book on 1st force logistical command or rather about his whole experience when he joined the Marines and fought in the Vietnam War. Educated is also a great memoir written by Tara Westover containing her story of success and survival.
If writing a memoir ever crossed your mind but you are still hesitant to pursue your plan, then are some of the aspects how writing a memoir benefits you.
Allows you to tell your truth
There are different sides to every story. What others have told might be a little bit different from what you want to tell. It is because both of you have different perspectives, concepts, and thoughts making your takes on the matter slightly different from one another. In writing a memoir, you are given the chance to tell your truth to the world. Readers get to know your story, learn about your values and views, and boost their inspiration to make a difference in the society. It also empowers you and makes you realize that your story matters.
Brings you to a trip down memory lane
Many say that looking back does you no good. You will only reopen a healed wound or rediscover a buried pain. Thus, the word “past” has been associated with bad memories and other undesirable things; but, it shouldn’t stay that way. Writing memoirs immediately brings you on a trip down memory lane. This exercises your brain as well as helps you remember the events that happened a long time ago.
You need those memories because they are essential in the book that you are writing. In times that you cannot remember clearly, you can approach the people that you are with during those moments for a more accurate work. Therefore, there are big chances that you can reconnect with people, feel nostalgic, and appreciate how wonderful it is to remember and even relive those memories.
Helps you unload burdens
A person’s experiences are filled with different types of emotions. One defining feeling that many have gone through in some parts of their lives is pain. In this lifetime, the pain really demands to be felt. Through writing a memoir, you can unload those burdens that have been boosting your anxiety or cause you troubles for a long time. Hence, memoir-writing is a great way to heal your soul and turn your life around without the fear of getting hurt or being judged from your past mistakes and actions because you have already shared them in your work. You can finally be free from the baggage in your heart and even inspire others from conquering those wounds.
Urges you to see things in different angle
There are times that your perspectives toward a particular thing or event are becoming toxic. As a result, you will become close-minded with stagnant growth; and, you surely don’t want that to happen. Memoir is a nonfiction work that requires all details of a story to be factual. That said, you need to collect and craft the information from a certain segment of your life into a remarkable tale.
Take note that the person you were before isn’t the same as the person you are today. You may either become better or worse, but that doesn’t mean that there are no parts of you that are great. The moment you finished and reviewed a chapter or the whole manuscript, you will soon shift your perspective into a better and practical one. You can identify where you went wrong, what to change, and how you can better your choices so you can develop a nicer present and future.
Ooo, I never really thought of writing my own memoir before, but maybe I’m unofficially already doing it by blogging about my life. Great post here. Thanks for sharing!
